In Memoriam: Richard Mellon Scaife (1932–2014)

On July 4, the publisher and philanthropist Richard Mellon Scaife passed away. Heir to the Mellon banking fortune, Mr. Scaife was a “far-sighted and principled philanthropist,” in the words of American Conservatism: An Encyclopedia (ISI Books). Through the decades he and the foundations he ran gave hundreds of millions of dollars to conservative organizations and initiatives—including the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, which publishes the Intercollegiate Review. ISI remains immensely grateful to Mr. Scaife and his foundations for their long-standing and generous support.

Of course, as American Conservatism notes, Scaife’s support for conservative causes “made this private man a favorite target of the Left.” Indeed, Scaife was the bête noire of the Left long before the Koch brothers became the favorite target of vilification.

Among the many obituaries written in recent days, the editors of the IR especially recommend “The Legacy of Dick Scaife” by Heritage Foundation founder and ISI trustee Edwin J. Feulner Jr.

Requiescat in pace.
