Leave Social Media? - Intercollegiate Studies Institute

Leave Social Media?

Over the past few months I have had several conversations with friends about the way in which we use social media and texting.  As students, we are constantly surrounded by iThings and notification bubbles, but do those momentary distractions actually form true relationships?  Ironically, a fellow ISI-er recently shared this video on Facebook, which presents a challenge to the modern mindset on social media.  Take a moment to watch this powerful and thought provoking statement here.

How do you use social networks?  How often do you blankly surf Twitter feeds or Tumblr posts?  Are friendships based in the cloud, or in personal conversations over coffee?  The summer student diaspora admittedly makes it more difficult to stay in touch, but in the absence of social media, how might we foster true relationships in this time?
