Did Feminism Really Work?

I am writing as a woman whose kind isn’t supposed to exist. A Hispanic college student (I should be getting paid by the government to breathe, right?) who isn’t looking for free birth control from Obama or for my reproductive “rights” to be acknowledged by my peers. Well, I saw this picture the other day on a Facebook page called Beauty is Inside:

This is supposed to represent women and our true rights? Are you kidding? The picture might be an exaggeration but it is still in the spirit of what millions of spitfire women are advocating with every breath they take. They will be equal in every way and can do whatever they want with their bodies, their men, and their children because it’s their right, darn it, and they have been oppressed by patriarchal societies for too long!

Oh boy. (Sorry, was that sexist?)

It is true that, like so many other movements, if there wasn’t some serious problem, outrage and demand for change would not have occurred. Feminists got one thing right: women were not being treated as equals. But did feminism actually solve the problem? What so many have failed to grasp is that it is possible to be equal but still different. Equal in humanity, different in nature. Our standards for regarding men and women ought not be the same because it is fundamentally different to be a woman than it is to be a man.

Well, the feminists succeeded somewhat. Women are pretty much regarded as equal to men in every way. And guess what? We still have a huge problem. Now we have skyrocketing pornography rates and women’s bodies being used to sell just about everything, including PETA. Now families are falling apart because there is no distinction between male and female roles in what should be the basic units of our society.

Why? Because feminism is not pro-feminine. Feminism ruined any real respect for women. They are still objectified and not recognized for their true value. This is inequality. It’s just manifested differently.

It’s time for America to quit whining about “women’s rights” and realize that maybe–just maybe–they’re missing something crucial.
